Glenburn Tea Estate

Glenburn is a heavenly little plantation retreat located on a hillock above the banks of the River Rungeet in the Himalayas, overlooking the mighty Kanchenjunga range. Glenburn was founded in 1859 by a Scottish tea company and later passed into the hands of one of India's pioneering tea planting families – The Prakashes. Over the years, one of India's pioneering tea-planting families has come to be known as the "Chaiwala family," which literally means "tea planters."

The Chaiwala family's storey dates back over a century and is intertwined with that of Indian tea plantations. Today, the Prakash family's third and fourth generations carry nearly a century of tea knowledge in their ancestors, and they invite you to experience this legacy at Glenburn.

The "tea estate" experience was inspired by vineyards in Europe and other parts of the world, where visitors can watch the wine-making process, sample the wine, and shop for wine, local crafts, and produce. They found the entire experience to be educational and fascinating, and they were inspired to open their own tea estate for tourists who are curious about how a tea leaf ends up in their tea cup.

This project would not have been possible without the hard work and ingenuity of their Glenburn Tea Estate Manager and his team of local workers who transported everything to this extremely remote location with amazing results.

The Ideal Plan

This can be tailored to each individual guest. The majority of the walking is downhill, and the length of the walk can range from 1.5 to 3 hours, with the level of difficulty ranging from moderate to difficult, depending on the route taken. Guests may also drive the entire route, stopping for short walks at various points of interest along the way. The tour starts with an audio-visual presentation about Glenburn's history and a brief overview of how tea is grown, manufactured, and tasted. Then proceed to the Tea Factory for a guided tour of how the leaf is brought in from the fields, weighed, and then processed through the stages of withering, rolling, fermenting, drying, and sorting. The factory tour concludes with a tea tasting session featuring their black, green, oolong, and white teas, where visitors can learn about the differences in aroma, flavour, and appearance of tea produced in different ways and at different times of the year. The Tea Factory and Tasting Tour is typically done in the morning when the factory processes are in full swing, but the tea fields can be visited at any time during the day or on another day depending on each guest's itinerary. After that, you can go sightseeing in the nearby area.
